eros|thanatos

a ceramic sculptor, i use my close connection with the material to create hand-built statues that physically represent emotional states. i create lightweight, hollow forms that push the workability of clay by reducing the influence of gravity on the forms. at once brutal and delicate, they represent the duality of life and death, the eros and the thanatos.

my current body of work has focussed on making visual representations of the emotional states brought about through trauma, failure and existing as a queer person in an often hostile world.

using the aesthetic language of broken, incomplete classical greek and roman statues, i have been making large-scale hollow forms that blur the boundaries between figurative and abstract.

a new line of investigation contemplates the severe levels of degradation that can be seen in the most prestige of museum exhibtions. smaller, modular sculptures that can be restacked and reconfigures to suit different locations and emotions. they further push the duality of flesh and stone by adding architectural resonance.
